Healthy Cakes? Isn’t that some kind of a dichotomy? Oh, you think I’m referring to those inedible treats with poor substitutes that taste worse than bird food? Nope. Nahi. La. I shall explain.
As a recovering pessimist, I try to see the glass half full. ‘Try’ being the operative word here. But try as I might, when my gynae told that sugar was the root cause of PCOS, I wanted to insert that glass in some dark places (if you know what I mean). Why live a life with no cakes, pastries, brownies, chips, nachos – everything that makes life worth living. I had a silent meltdown in front of the doctor but at home I was pretty much Meredith.
I made a silent pact with god, if he made PCOS go away –
- I’ll be a good catholic girl – will stop saying ‘God is in my heart’ and go to church once a week
- I’ll learn to make round chapatis. (It’s a type of Indian bread. No not Naan Bread – as some people who shan’t be named fondly call it. Has anyone told them Naan = bread? And when you say NAAN BREAD, you’re basically saying BREAD BREAD. I digress.
Alas. I wasn’t meant to be a good chapati-making Catholic. I learnt PCOS can’t be cured. So I just had to swallow that truth and let go of everything I lived for much-loved desserts. (If only that truth was a bag of sugar.) End of dramatic episode. Scene 1.
Anywhoo, after a couple of months of researching I discovered cakes can be healthy if they’re baked with the right substitute. You see sugar alternatives do you more harm than good so I looked for options without nasty substitutes. Thankfully (I think), since I wasn’t the only one with food intolerances and health issues in the city, I learnt a number of brands were slowly catering to people like me. I bring to you a couple of yummy baked goodness which are both sumptuous and healthy. Like most things in life, moderation is key so please indulge sparingly.
Now you can have your cake and eat it too 😀 (I just had to).
